Weather Sensitivity: What Happens When the Weather Changes?

Sunshine in the morning, rain in the afternoon, and noticeably cooler temperatures the next day: especially during the transitional seasons, the weather can change within a short period of time. Some people notice these changes in weather not only when looking out the window, but also report headaches, fatigue, or a general feeling of being unwell.

This is often referred to as weather sensitivity. But can a change in weather really affect how we feel? What role do temperature, atmospheric pressure, and humidity play? And why do some people seem to notice these changes more strongly than others?

What Does Weather Sensitivity Mean?

Our bodies are constantly responding to their environment. When the outside temperature changes, for example, the body adjusts its heat production and heat loss accordingly. Changes in blood flow to the skin and sweat production are also part of this ongoing regulation.

The term weather sensitivity does not describe a clearly defined medical condition. Rather, it refers to subjective symptoms that people associate with changes in the weather.

However, not every perceived reaction to the weather can be scientifically linked to a specific weather factor. Temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and other environmental conditions often change at the same time, making it difficult to study each factor in isolation.

What Symptoms Are Associated With Weather Sensitivity?

People who describe themselves as weather-sensitive may report headaches, fatigue, dizziness, circulatory problems, or a general feeling of being unwell.

However, these symptoms can have many different causes and cannot automatically be attributed to a change in weather. The relationship between certain weather factors and migraine, in particular, has been studied scientifically.

What Role Do Temperature, Atmospheric Pressure, and Humidity Play?

Weather consists of a number of different factors that often change simultaneously. For this reason, it is scientifically difficult to determine exactly how individual weather conditions affect us.

  • Temperature:
    Our bodies respond immediately to changes in environmental temperature. In warm conditions, the body releases heat through mechanisms such as increased blood flow to the skin and sweating. In cold conditions, blood flow to the skin decreases in order to limit heat loss. These responses are part of normal thermoregulation.

  • Atmospheric Pressure:
    Changes in atmospheric pressure have been studied primarily in connection with headaches and migraines. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis that included 31 studies found statistical associations between migraine attacks and certain weather factors, particularly temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, the results were not completely consistent across all studies.

  • Humidity:
    Humidity has also been investigated as a possible influencing factor. So far, the scientific evidence is less clear. For example, the 2025 meta-analysis did not find a statistically significant association between humidity and migraine attacks.

Current research therefore argues against overly simple statements such as “falling atmospheric pressure causes headaches.” Certain weather conditions may be associated with symptoms in some people, but the degree of sensitivity appears to vary from person to person.

Why Do Some People React More Strongly to Changes in Weather?

Why one person clearly notices a change in weather while another notices nothing at all is not yet fully understood.

Weather also does not affect our well-being in isolation. Sleep, stress, hydration, physical activity, and individual health factors may all play a role at the same time.

In people with migraines, weather is therefore generally considered one of several possible triggers or influencing factors, rather than the sole cause.

What Can You Do If You Are Weather-Sensitive?

We cannot change the weather itself. However, certain everyday habits may help support overall well-being and normal bodily functions.

  • Stay Active and Spend Time Outdoors
    Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health. Going for a walk is also an easy way to incorporate movement into your daily routine—regardless of whether the weather is perfect.

  • Stay Hydrated
    Especially when temperatures rise, the body loses fluid through sweating. Getting enough fluids is therefore particularly important on warm days.

  • Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule
    Getting enough sleep and maintaining a reasonably consistent sleep schedule are important foundations for overall well-being.

  • Make Time for Recovery
    Stress can affect your personal sense of well-being just as much as external conditions. Regular periods of rest, physical activity, and time outdoors can therefore be valuable additions to your everyday routine.

Do Contrast Showers (alternating hot and cold water) or Saunas Help With Weather Sensitivity?

Contrast showers and sauna sessions are often recommended in connection with weather sensitivity.

Our bodies do respond to heat and cold with various adaptations involving thermoregulation and the cardiovascular system. However, this does not automatically mean that sauna sessions or contrast showers can prevent or treat weather sensitivity.

There is currently not enough reliable scientific evidence to support such a specific effect.

If you tolerate saunas, warm and cold showers, or other forms of temperature exposure well, you can certainly incorporate them into your personal wellness routine. However, they should not be considered a scientifically proven treatment for weather sensitivity.

Weather-Sensitive? Pay Attention to Your Own Patterns

If you feel that you regularly react to certain weather conditions, you can keep a simple journal for several weeks.

For example, you might record your symptoms, sleep, stress levels, physical activity, and notable weather conditions.

This may help you identify personal patterns. However, these observations cannot automatically establish a cause-and-effect relationship with the weather.

If you experience severe, new, or persistent symptoms, the underlying cause should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Conclusion: Weather Sensitivity Is Individual

It is perfectly normal for our bodies to respond to changes in the environment. This is particularly apparent when it comes to regulating body temperature. Whether—and to what extent—changes in weather can trigger specific symptoms is much more difficult to determine.

For some symptoms, particularly migraines, current studies show associations with weather factors such as temperature and atmospheric pressure. At the same time, findings vary depending on the weather factor being studied and from person to person.

Weather sensitivity therefore cannot be reduced to one simple cause.

External conditions may instead be one of several factors that influence how an individual feels.

We cannot change the weather. But regular physical activity, adequate sleep and hydration, and intentional periods of rest can help create supportive conditions for overall well-being.
